When Sony made the Spider-Man deal with Marvel awhile back, their plans for a cinematic Spidey universe were believed to have been squashed after the failure of Amazing Spider-Man 2 led to the creation of a new Spider-Man reboot that is connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Well it seems like Sony might be restarting their plans once again in the form of a Venom spin-off movie.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony has hired Dante Harper to write the script for the untitled Venom Movie which will be produced by Spider-Man series veterans Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach. The film is being seen as a launching point for a franchise that will stand alone from the upcoming Tom Holland Spider-Man film.
Venom made its first on-screen appearance in Spider-Man 3 and was played by Topher Grace. A spin-off for the character has been in development for years, with Gary Ross and Josh Trank among the list of directors coming and going, and writers such as Paul Wernick, Rhett Reese, Alex Kurtzman, and Roberto Orci attached to pen scripts at some point.
There is no word yet on which version of Venom will be used, who the director will be, which actor would play the lead role, or when the movie is being eyed for a release date. It is also unknown if this will also be apart of the MCU as well or take place in its own separate film universe.
The Spider-Man reboot is scheduled to launch on July 7, 2017 but fans will be able to see Tom Holland make his debut as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War on May 6, 2016.
