While at a panel at Wizard World Comic Con in Chicago, a fan asked Nathan Fillion which hero from either the Marvel or DC universe he would like to play the most. It didn’t take long for Fillion to respond and express his desire to play the comic book hero Booster Gold.
“I think I could take a pretty good crack at Booster Gold,” said Fillion. “That’s kind of my niche — show-offy, vain. I think I could handle that — not too bright.”
Michael Jon Carter aka Booster Gold, was once a famous football player from the distant future until his career fell apart when he was caught betting on his own games. Still hungry for fame and fortune, he stole a power suit and a robot sentry named Skeets from the superhero museum that he was working at as a security guard. After creating the identity Booster Gold, he then used a time machine to travel back to modern time to use his knowledge of the future and advanced technology to turn himself into a superhero celebrity. At first Booster was only in it for the fame and glory, but over time he eventually comes to prove himself to be an actual hero.
Fillion is no stranger to playing superheroes. He voiced Green Lantern in several of the animated Justice League movies like Doom and Throne of Atlantis, he played a small role in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy as a prison inmate, and Captain Hammer (a character very similar to Booster Gold) in Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog.
Even though there were a few Booster Gold easter eggs in 2013’s Man of Steel, someone like Booster Gold with all of his comical flashiness seems like a character that’s pretty far removed and out-of-place from the “dark and gritty” themed movies that DC has been putting in theaters lately. Although with the Shazam movie, a story about a boy turning into an adult superhero by saying a magic word just a few years away, maybe there could be a possibility of seeing someone like Booster Gold on the big screen one day even if he isn’t played by someone like Fillion. Until then, the next time that we would most likely see Booster Gold outside of the comics would either be in one of DC’s live-action shows like Flash or Arrow or maybe in one of the DC animated movies with Fillion hopefully voicing the character himself.
